Cases from the Jacksonville Division

Several notable cases coming out of Jacksonville include a physician who was charged with downloading images and videos of child pornography from the internet. Jacksonville Sheriff Deputies were called to the doctor’s residence where they were shown a file on the desktop computer involving images of child pornography. Detectives then searched the residence and found troves of DVDS, cassettes, and compact disks filled with child pornographic material. The desktop computer contained 113 videos and 93 images of child pornography. The defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in federal prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release.

Another notable case involves the investigation and incarceration of an interstate drug ring. The Jacksonville and Miami DEA Task Force and the U.S. Attorney’s office launched “Operation Mirror Image”; a year-long investigation of a group of drug dealers transporting narcotics from Texas to Florida for distribution. Nine individuals were charged with conspiracy to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine. Most of the defendants pleaded guilty and 1 is a fugitive on the run. The severity of each individual’s punishment ranged from 10 years to a minimum of 20 years. According to the press release, the conspiracy resulted in over $4 million in drug proceeds.

These are only a small sample of the criminal cases prosecuted in the Jacksonville area. Narcotics cases make up the large bulk but economic crimes such as Medicare fraud, identity theft, embezzlement, and tax fraud are cases common to the Jacksonville area and prosecuted in the federal court. Violent crimes such as sexual assaults or crimes involving bodily harm are more likely prosecuted in the state court system.
